Greenwich 2000:The Orwell Bridge

Greenwich, Ipswich: is a suburb of the Anglo-Saxon town of Ipswich, Suffolk. Ipswich is the first Anglo-Saxon town. High on a hill it overlooks the Ipswich docks (below) on the River Orwell and down-stream to the Orwell Bridge.

Greenwich is a municipal housing estate. The destination of the number 1 bus.

Below the Greenwich estate is the dock area with grain and oil storage. Here you will find Greenwich Road and, opposite, its more modern counterpart, Greenwich Close

Anglo-Saxon Origins

Both Greenwich and Ipswich demonstrate their Anglo-Saxon origins by the -wich ending.

Ipswich was originally called Gippeswyk. There is still a park called Gippeswyk Park. Over time Gippeswyk has become Ipswich.

The Anglo-Saxons originally crossed the North Sea from what is now Holland (The Netherlands) leaving behind places such as Rijswijk and . (R˙sw˙k and Noordw˙k)

Other places in East Anglia and Kent ending -wich are:

  • Dunwich, Suffolk (now mainly lost into the North Sea)
