Feathers Project: A workplace for people who have or who have experienced mental health problems

The Feathers Project is a workplace for people with mental health problems, based in Greenwich, where people who have or who have experienced mental health problems can return to or introduce themselves to the world of work in a supportive and challenging environment.

Returning to work after a period of mental ill health can be a very difficult experience. People may have lost their confidence, and many people first experience mental health problems in their late teens or early twenties, at a crucial time for their education, personal and career development.

Feathers provides a variety of work opportunities by undertaking work for the general public, local businesses and community organisations. The Project offers gardening, decorating, furniture restoration, removals and minor building services, as well as producing soft furnishings, textiles and arts & crafts, all to high standards, with training provided for all members of the workforce.

Chris Deakin, Project Director, believes that Feathers works for everybody, one way or another. "Many people who come to the Project move on to further education or full-time employment while, for others, it may take several years at the Project before gaining the skills and confidence to move on. Feathers gives people responsibility and presents them with challenges to test themselves against."

‘Working at Feathers has been great for me,’ said John. ‘A few years ago I lost my job, and couldn’t find another, and gradually began to feel more and more depressed. It got harder to be around people and in the end I had trouble even leaving the house, I would get so anxious. My doctor recommended that I go along to Feathers to take a look, and I really liked the atmosphere here. I used to be a builder, so they can really use my skills, and its great to be doing my old job again. I’m looking for a job now. Feathers has been the thing that turned it all around for me.’

Lost Pubs!

The Black Rabbit (could be anywhere in England!)

Greetings from a Brit. in somewhat sunny Colorado, USA. I am an instructor at the local community college and one of my students gave me a challenge today. His father purchased a boat that used to be owned by the proprietor of a pub by the name of "The Black Rabbit" and he would like to write to him. Problem: he does not where the pub is or the proprietor's name!! Can you help?

Lost Churches!

St. Catherine's Church, Blackheath (?)

I'm doing genealogical research on Thomas Ballard, who is rumoured to be buried in St. Catherine's Church, Blackheath. I am his 13th great-granddaughter. I've been unable to find a location for the church, if, indeed, it still exists. I would appreciate any help you might provide.

Trying to find Mandy, maiden name Williams, last known to be living in Deptford. She used to live in Elswick Road in the 1970's; her mothers name is Teresa.
