Major changes are happening (again) to the phone number system in the UK. One of the major changes is to London phone numbers. All London phone numbers will change in 2 important ways. A new London area code is being introduced which will re-unit all London phones under the 020 code. Local phone numbers in London are also changing. The 7 digit local numbers (xxx xxxx) are changing to 8 digit numbers (xxxx xxxx). These are being phased in starting on 1 June 1999. London Area Code:Changes from (0171) or (0181) to (020) London Local Numbers:Create the new eight-digit local number by adding 7 or 8 to the front of the existing local number, depending on whether you are in an existing 0171 or 0181 area. Note: These will not work within London until 22 April 2000. Examples:(0171) XXX XXXX becomes (020) 7XXX XXXX - International +44 (20) 7XXX XXXX (0181) XXX XXXX becomes (020) 8XXX XXXX - International +44 (20) 8XXX XXXX Timetable1 June 1999 - You will be able to use the new area code with the new local number. When dialling locally, before the changeover day on 22 April 2000 you will need to use the existing number. 22 April 2000 - Introduction of new local numbers within London. You will continue to be able to use either the new area code and new local number, or the existing area code and existing local number, until 14 October 2000. .
