Final Dome visitor numbersMore people visited the Dome in one year than any other paying attraction in the UK for almost half a century. Although the original target of 12 million visitors was clearly over-optimistic, attracting more than 6.5 million people in one year is a remarkable achievement - equivalent to visits by more than one in ten of the UK population. During 2000, the Million Dome was the number one destination for school visits on record, with 1.2 million children attending with their schools (642,519 had free places) The Dome welcomed its six millionth visitor on Tuesday 12 December 2000. Deborah Ansell (36) of Copnor, Portsmouth, was presented with a £2,000 diamond necklace by Dome Chief Executive P Y Gerbeau. The total number of paying visitors during 2000 was 5,874,597.
