BRITISH GAS PREPARE TO CLEAR DOME SITE

Greenwich 31 May 1996

PROPOSED CUTTY SARK STATION - DECISION SOON

Its as if there had been no delay to the Millennium Exhibition Site announced early this month. British Gas, owners of the site which will stage the proposed Millennium site, intend to start cleaning up operations during June.

It is also reported that the proposed DLR (Docklands Light Railway) extension south of the River Thames from Docklands will include a station near to the famous dry-docked Cutty Sark.

Presently the DLR stops at Island Gardens and passengers have to walk through the 100 year old Greenwich Foot Tunnel to reach Greenwich. It is hoped that the DLR extension with the Cutty Sark station will be completed in time for the Year 2000 and Millennium Celebrations.

Whilst the London Underground Jubilee Line Extension (Tube) will be completed in 1998 the DLR finish date is not likely to be until 1999.

The Jubilee Line will bring passengers from the West End in under 20 minutes to Greenwich North Station, in the heart of the proposed Millennium Exhibition Site.

Meanwhile the DLR extension bring passengers from the City (Bank) and Tower of London (Tower Gateway) to Cutty Sark. This will be an ideal point for visitors to the heart of Greenwich and its famous landmarks including the National Maritime Museum and, of course, the point where the Millennium will begin The Royal Observatory Greenwich.
