Millennium Site acquired by English PartnershipsGreat local interest in Exhibition PlansGreenwich, 21 November 1996Organisers of the Millennium Exhibition expressed their delight today that agreement has been reached by and regarding the transfer of ownership of the Greenwich peninsula - which will be the main site of the UK's millennium celebrations. "This is fantastic news for the millennium project," Millennium Exhibition Chief Executive Barry Hartop said today. "It is another milestone on the route to making the millennium exhibition a reality." "From our point of view, single ownership of the site makes negotiations and construction much easier and will allow us to proceed according to schedule to bring the millennium exhibition in on time." The agreement today refers to the sale of the whole 294 acre Greenwich Peninsula site - of which the 130 acre millennium exhibition site forms part - by British Gas to English Partnerships. The Millennium Exhibition organisers have already submitted a planning application to Greenwich Council for the site and are currently working to produce a detailed business plan which will be presented to the Millennium Commission next month - to make the business case for the exhibition and secure the necessary £200 million required from National Lottery funds. An additional £150 million is required from private sector sponsorship to pay for the construction of the Exhibition. Barry Hartop added: "Despite recent inaccurate press speculation, we are confident that we will reach the funding target we set ourselves and that come next spring we will have the necessary business plan and funds we need to make the exhibition a success. Nearly 2000 members of the public have visited the public exhibition of plans for the millennium exhibition site at Greenwich Borough Hall as part of the Millennium public consultation since November 8th.. A further 1000 representatives of local business, community groups and local politicians have taken part in millennium exhibition presentations in the last two weeks. |
