One million pound boost for Greenwich

Greenwich, 29 April 1998

The Millennium Experience is to put UKP300,000 into cultural activity in Greenwich that could be boosted to almost £1 million with match funding from other public bodies. The money will be used to promote arts, sports, music, open spaces and training in the run-up to and during the year 2000.

Greenwich Council and the Millennium Experience is seeking views on how the cultural plan should be developed and what activities and events should take place. Copies of the executive summary which contains details of the consultation process are available from:

Greenwich Millennium Office
11 King William Walk
London SE10

Telephone: 0181 305 1999

Current proposals include:

  • A Millennium Festival of lively and dynamic events across art forms involving local, national and international arts
  • A scene setting Festival in 1999 and a New Year's Eve event in 1998
  • A community chest for small local projects
  • A public art walk through the borough of Greenwich
  • An information network to provide up-to-date information to local people and visitors
  • The provision of workspace and equipment to encourage the creative industries
  • Training and education programmes through the University of Greenwich, Woolwich College and Greenwich Community College

Jennie Page, Chief Executive of NMEC said: 'The Millennium Experience will be a unique cultural event that will allow for the involvement of everyone in the country. We want to ensure that people in the host borough can play their part in welcoming the world to Greenwich - not just in 2000 but before and after. The plan will play an important part in providing social legacy by offering new opportunities for local people.'

The plan has been welcomed by Cllr Bob Harris, Deputy Leader of Greenwich Council, who said: 'Greenwich has a great tradition of cultural activity from all our communities. The Greenwich Festival is known throughout the world. The cultural plan allows us to join with the Millennium Experience to support local organisations and bring them on to a much bigger stage with the best of international artists.'
