Greenwich, New South Wales, Australia
Greenwich around the globe....
Description
Greenwich, New South Wales: is a northern suburb of Sydney about 15 minutes from the city centre. It is a peninsula surrounded by the upper reaches of Sydney Harbour, and faces to the west a similar suburb named Woolwich. Both suburbs, as well as others nearby (such as Chiswick, Putney, and Henley) probably derive their names from their London Thames-side namesakes.
Greenwich had early associations with boat building and still has a couple of boat yards, but is mostly a quiet residential area fringed with bushland adjacent to the water. A Shell oil storage depot occupies one side of the peninsula, and large tankers still regularly dock there. Fine views of Sydney and its upper harbour are to be had from many vantage points.
There is a harbour swimming pool (with sharkproof net!), several little parks, tennis courts, many interesting short walks, and a picturesque ferry service to the City.
People who live here count themselves as being very fortunate.
