Connecticut - Gateway to New England ()

: Greenwich extends over 50 square miles from the rolling hills, woods and meadows of backcountry dotted with lakes and wetlands, to its 32 miles of shoreline, coves and tributaries on Long Island Sound. Town residents enjoy nearly 1,500 acres of park land. They include a large Audubon Center, two islands on the Sound with beaches served by town ferries, and Greenwich Point with a beach, boating and picnic facilities and woodland walks. The town also owns and operates an 18-hole golf course, dozens of paddle and tennis courts, a skating rink and marinas. There are four private yacht clubs, eight golf clubs and a tennis and squash racquet club. Year-round recreation is offered by the YMCA and YWCA and, for children, a Boys & Girls Club, a teen center, and the very first chapter of the , founded by Greenwich's Earnest Thompson Seton.

Located at the edge of the New York Metropolitan area, Greenwich is just 29 miles from Times Square. Express trains make the run to Manhattan in less than an hour. All three major New York area airports can be reaches in 45 minutes to a little over an hour by car or scheduled limousine. Westchester Airport offers scheduled airline service to many U.S. cities is just 15 minutes from central Greenwich.

Greenwich offers a unique mix of small New England town ambience with a metropolitan sophistication, office parks and attractive shipping areas with backcountry rural settings and some of Long Island Sound's most beautiful shorelines.

Greenwich is well known for it's affluent and responsive residents. The average income for the 60,000+ full year and summer residents is over $108,000.

Many executives has moved their headquarters from Wall Street, finding it just as easy to conduct business in Greenwich, enjoy a more casual lifestyle, and by avoiding the hour's commute have more time with their families. In fact, twice as many people today commute into Greenwich, long considered a bedroom area for New York, to work than the reverse.

Local History

- 41st President of the United States (b. June 12, 1924) was born in Milton, Massachusetts and raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. In Greenwich, George Bush attended Greenwich Country Day School before entering Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.

"Transatlantic Crossing" Remembered
(from Radio-Electronics, December, 1951)

...On December 11, 1921, a group of six amateurs sent the first short-wave message across the Atlantic Ocean. The message, which was picked up in Androssan, Scotland, by Paul Godley, opened the door for intensive work and developments in short-wave communications and forever killed the theory that "wavelengths below 200 meters are useless".

Exactly 20 years before (December 12, 1901) Marconi - also using short wavelengths - had received a single letter across the Atlantic. Since then there had been no verified report of successful communication at such short wavelengths and the exploit had dropped to the status of a legend in the minds of communication engineers. But by 1921 reports of British reception of American amateur signals had been seeping through with enough insistence to persuade the American Radio Relay League to check and to make an official test.  Paul Godley, one of America's leading amateurs, was sent to Scotland, and the hams on this side set about building a station that "would get across".

In 1994, the Radio Club of America erected a memorial stone  to commemorate one of the most decisive transmissions in the history of radio.  Four original operators of 1BCG, first short-wave station to transmit a trans-Atlantic message, were present at the dedication of a memorial to that station.  The stone is located at the intersection of North Street and Clapboard Ridge Road in Greenwich, Connecticut).
