DOCKLANDS RAILWAY COME TO GREENWICH

Local opposition to demolition plans

Greenwich, 27 September 1996

The UK Deputy Prime Minister, today launched a UKP200 million (US$ 300 million) extension to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). There has been local opposition to the scheme and soaring costs. The extension will extend the DLR from its present terminus on the Isle of Dogs under the River Thames to Greenwich then onwards to Lewisham. The projected UKP140 million (US$ 210 million) price of the three-mile extension has increased because of rising costs in the construction industry and reported difficulties in financing private sector backing.

Local businesses and campaigners in Greenwich are also concerned that a group of 18th century buildings in the heart of the historic town centre will be demolished to make way for these developments.

It is hoped to have the project completed in time for the Millennium Celebrations.

Meanwhile there is still speculation over the funding of the Millennium Exhibition. No public plans are available and planning permission has still not been applied for.
