1000 DAY COUNTDOWN TO THE MILLENNIUM CELEBRATIONS
DAY OF SPECIAL EVENTS AND FREE PUBLIC ENTRY
Saturday 5 April 1997 marks the start of the 1000-Day Countdown to the Millennium Celebrations at the Home of Time - the Old Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
To celebrate the start of the Countdown, 1000-Day Countdown Day - a family day of events and activities based on time and the Millennium - will take place at the Observatory.
1000-Day Countdown Day includes the first and only chance for the public to witness the Greenwich Millennium Countdown Clock (specially-commissioned from Accurist Watches) reading '1000' days. The Clock will be positioned on the Meridian Line in the Observatory courtyard - the point from which the new Millennium will begin for the world.
The 1000th visitor will receive a special 1000-day Countdown gift pack and all visitors will be offered a complimentary 'The Millennium Starts Here' badge.
Events on the day will include Time In Our Hands - a day-long display by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in which visitors can obtain a free check on the accuracy of their watches and discover the skills and technology of timekeeping
The release of 1000 balloons from the Meridian Line at 1 .00pm when the giant red Timeball drops - 'The Champagne Mumm Balloon Race'; storytellers throughout the day and a chance to explore the Millennium skies in London's only live Planetarium. Celebrity book-signings and strolling entertainers are also being planned.
