1997 London Marathon
Congratulations to all 29,250 runners of the 1997 race from the starting line in Greenwich Park and Blackheath
Greenwich is the Home of World Time, the Prime Meridian of the World and the World Millennium Celebrations
The 1997 Race
Both races ended in an exciting sprint finish.
Men's Race
Men's winner: Antonio Pinto (Portugal) - 2 hrs 7 mins 55 secs - new course record
Pinto, last won here in 1992, notched up his third career victory in 10 outings over the marathon distance
2nd place - Stefano Baldini (Italy) 2 hrs 7 mins 57 secs.
3rd place - Olympic champion Josiah Thugwane (South Africa) 2hrs 08mins 06secs
Improved his personal best by three-and-a-half minutes.

- The race starts in historic Greenwich Park (1st vantage point)
- Heads east towards Woolwich
- Down to the River Thames near to the Woolwich Ferry
- Back west to Greenwich passing the Cutty Sark in Greenwich centre (2nd vantage point)
- Carries on west to Tower Bridge and beyond..
- Spectators can cross under the Greenwich Foot Tunnel
- Meet the runners as they pass through Docklands (3rd vantage point)
