Events in and around Greenwich during 1997

 This is an eventful year. We move into the 1,000 days before 31 December 1999 and the start of the Millennium Celebrations. The replica of Captain Cook's ship Endeavour arrives in Greenwich. The re-opening of the country's largest refracting telescope and the Old Royal Observatory's first Annual Family Lecture. This all happens in a few weeks between mid-March and the beginning of April!

It is the 30th Anniversary of Sir Francis Chichester circumnavigating the globe in Gipsy Moth IV. Both Blackwall Tunnels have major birthday's too. All this and a whole lot more!

Wednesday 5 March - Greenwich Park experimental through-traffic bans commences

Friday 14 March - DAY

Friday 14 March - Sunday 23 March - National Week of Science, Engineering and Technology 97 (set97). Special events at the Old Royal Observatory including the re-opening the UK's largest refracting telescope and the first Annual Family Lecture and a whole lot more!.

Endeavour

Monday 24 March - opening of Cook and the Endeavour Exhibition at the Queens House . Runs until 21 September.

Tuesday 25 March - Endeavour scheduled to arrive in London.

Friday 28 March - Good Friday. Endeavour open to public at Greenwich until 13 April.

Sunday March 30 - Easter Day GMT gives way to British Summer Time (Daylight Savings Time) in the UK. Clocks go FORWARD at 1 am GMT.

Monday 31 March - Easter Monday .

The Cutty Sark renovation of its 3 masts is scheduled to be completed.

April

Saturday 5 April 1997 - The Thousand Day Countdown to the Year 2000 begins!

Sunday 13th April 1997 - London Marathon starts on Blackheath / Greenwich Park .
Last chance to see Endeavour in Greenwich - make it a day out!

May

Monday May 5 - May Day Holiday

Thursday 22 May - the original Blackwall Tunnel opened 100 years ago. It is now used for north-bound traffic and is referred to as the Northern Bore. It is low (max. height 4m) and winding because it was designed for horse and carriage traffic. Large modern lorries manage to ignore the height signs and get stuck in the tunnel causing rush-hour chaos. It's younger companion celebrates its 30 birthday on 2 August.

Wednesday 28 May - 30th Anniversary of the end of Sir Francis Chichester's epic solo circum-navigation of the globe in Gipsy Moth IV

Schools Out

August

Saturday 2 August - The younger Blackwall Tunnel is 30 years old today. Used for south-bound traffic it is much straighter and taller. However in December 1996 a very tall lorry managed too get stuck in the tunnel for 10 hours and created the biggest traffic jam in London for over 20 years.

Back to School - Not much time left to learn a new skill for the millennium.

October

Tuesday 21 October - Only 800 days left on the Thousand Day Countdown .

Sunday October 26 - GMT returns as British Summer Time ends. Clocks go BACK at 2am BST to 1am GMT.

Friday 31 October - Halloween

November

Wednesday 5 November - Guy Fawkes night; time for bonfires and fireworks. Remembers the attempt to blow-up parliament in 1605 in the Gunpowder Plot. A large bonfire is usually held on Blackheath on the Saturday before (tbc).

December
