The Millennium starts here!!!
There are a large number of separate Millennium Projects being proposed, organised or planned in and around Greenwich. Some are in an advanced stage of development, other still on the drawing board. We aim to bring you the details as, and when, they are announced.
Greenwich Meridian 2000
A project run by the National Maritime Museum (owners of the Old Greenwich Observatory - the point at which World Time is measured). Many major celebrations are being planned including a Millennium Countdown beginning on 7th April 1997.

Greenwich Millennium Trust
Headed by Sir Bob Scott. Organisers of "Time for Greenwich 2000" project.
Greenwich Millennium Exhibition
The event that has attracted most media attention. It is proposed to use a combination of Millennium Commission money and private capital to build Europe's largest Millennium Celebration on a 400 acre site on the Greenwich Peninsular where the Meridian Line crosses the River Thames. It is some 1.5 miles (2 km) from the heart of Greenwich and the Old Royal Observatory where the Millennium officially begins. Details available of the World's biggest dome structure.
Greenwich Waterfront Development
A programme of complete regeneration of the Thames waterfront from Woolwich to Greenwich and Deptford. The work is being undertaken in phase known as Single Regeneration Budget (or SRB), phases I, II and III.
Jubilee Line Extension
The London Underground is building the Jubilee Line Extension. The present Jubilee Line will follow a new line from Green Park via Westminster, Waterloo, London Bridge, Docklands and North Greenwich through to Stratford in East London. The line will open on 22 March 1998. Greenwich North will be the largest station on the London Underground not connected to the British Rail network.
Docklands Light Railway Extension
- The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is planning to extend the line from Island Gardens (opposite Greenwich) to Lewisham. It is proposed to have a station at Cutty Sark. Plans have been announced to start the project.

A major scheme financed by the private sector is being prepared which would bring 50,000 tonne cruise ships close to the heart of London. New shopping complexes and access to the historic Greenwich sites are also planned.
Millennium Commission
The UK Government has set up the Millennium Commission to use UK Lottery funds to fund a variety of Millennium projects throughout the UK.
Globarama
An imaginative scheme to build a tower on the Meridian Line on the banks of the River Thames at Greenwich. This would be a architectural landmark and a technological marvel.
Virgin Mega Balloon
Richard Branson has announced a plan to operate a giant tethered balloon service from Greenwich up the River Thames into the heart of London.
