CHIEF OF MILLENNIUM EXHIBITION APPOINTED

MILLENNIUM JOB FOR WELSH AGENCY CHIEF

Greenwich, 3 October 1996

Barry Hartop, the chief executive of the Welsh Development Agency, has today been appointed chief executive designate of the Millennium Exhibition company, which will be responsible for the multi million pound Millennium Exhibition, centred on Greenwich.

Millennium Exhibition chairman, British Airways chief executive Bob Ayling said: ``Barry possesses the kind of vision which is necessary for this project to become reality and make it an outstanding success for Britain. His considerable experience in the private and public sectors make him the ideal man for this challenging new role.'' David Rowe-Beddoe, chairman of the Welsh Development Agency, said: ``Barry has steered the agency through a period of considerable change with great success and we are pleased a chief executive of his calibre has been chosen to lead the project at this stage.''

Rt Hon Virginia Bottomley MP, chairman of the Millennium Commission, said: ``I am delighted that Barry Hartop will lead the Millennium Exhibition project. I know that he has done a first class job at the Welsh Development Agency.'' Mr Hartop, 54, who has been at the agency for more than two years, said: ``Since the chairman and I were appointed we have re-organised, got a new management team, morale is high and all commentators in Wales would be saying how successful it is.'' The ``crown'' of the last few years was to get the investment of LG, the South Korean conglomerate which announced plans to build a UKP 1.7 billion (USD 2.5 billion) electronics complex in South Wales, he said.

Doubt has been cast on enthusiasm from the private sector for the Millennium project, but Mr Hartop said: ``It's going to be the biggest party in the world, a great success. ``We need to look carefully to make sure that we have a very attractive sponsorship package, and I think we shall get a lot of support from British and overseas companies.''
