Millennium Central chief to resign?

Millennium Exhibition hits new crisis

Greenwich, 20 December 1996

The London Evening Standard is reporting that the man brought in to take charge of the Millennium Exhibition has quit. This is at a crucial moment in the project's history.

Barry Hartop is said to have left because his three-month secondment from the Welsh Development Agency has ended. He is, however, expected to stay as chief executive of Millennium Central at least until the future of the Millennium dome was assured. It is believed he was disillusioned with the way the Greenwich project was progressing. The problems plaguing the ambitious plan, which is supposed to be the centre of Britain's celebrations in 2000, have come to a head in the last few days.

It is claimed that it is still GBP50 million (cUSD 75m) short of private sponsorship and the cost of setting it up has spiralled from GBP500 million to GBP700 million (IE up to a billion US dollars). UK businesses are unwilling to come up with more money unless they know that the Government will underwrite any unforeseen costs but the Labour Party, which could soon be in power, is refusing to agree. With the UK Government and Labour Party currently in deadlock over how to solve the problem, it is the most sensitive time for the scheme to date.

Yesterday, the chairman of Millennium Central, British Airways chief executive Bob Ayling, met shadow heritage secretary Jack Cunningham to try to persuade him to give the assurances needed. Mr Cunningham was reported to have been more amenable, but it is not clear whether he delivered the pledges sought by Mr Ayling. Mr Cunningham believes the true cost of the exhibition could reach GBP1 billion and is worried about signing a "blank cheque".

The Greenwich 2000 web-site is independently funded.
