Millennium Exhibition saved by Prime Minister, Tony Blair

Millennium Dome saved but major changes to rescue project (again)

Greenwich, 19 June 1997

The UK Government has given the go-ahead to the controversial Millennium Exhibition at Greenwich. The Cabinet dismissed calls to "dump the dome" but decided to apply five tough new tests to the scheme.

The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, told the Cabinet that the project would put Britain firmly on the map at an important moment in history and it was his instinct that it should go ahead. (see our letter to the Prime Minister, 2 May 1997)

Tony Blair then headed to Greenwich this afternoon to announce that the Millennium Dome has been saved. Standing on the Meridian Line he said "The eyes of the World will be on Britain"; "It could be the most exciting thing happening anywhere in the World in the year 2000".

The surprise decision, however, was taken only after a difficult Cabinet debate which lasted more than an hour.

The five tests are:

  1. The Millennium Exhibition must be durable and able to last "forever", rather than have to be pulled down within a couple of years.

  2. There should be no extra burden on the public purse to fund the project, which at the moment is estimated at a total of UKP 580 million (USD 950 million) which would come from cash and business sponsorship as well as ticket sales.

  3. The wants the content of the exhibition to be made more exciting, with more detail on precisely what will be inside the dome.

  4. The Dome project must relate to the whole nation and involve links with Scotland, Wales and the regions.

  5. There must be a new management structure with an injection of new people who are "ideas merchants and creative forces".
